Additive Innovations Launches Pilot Program for Rx Lab Printer, a Purpose-Built Binder Jetting Platform for Pharmaceutical Research and Development

Compact, benchtop-ready system brings industrial binder jetting expertise and precision printing dynamics to pharmaceutical formulation development

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, September 1, 2026 — Additive Innovations today announced the launch of a pilot program for its new Rx Lab printer, a binder jetting system engineered specifically for pharmaceutical research and development. The pilot program invites select partners to explore binder jet technology in-house for material(s) and tablet architecture development, with unit orders and development agreements available now and initial deliveries expected in Q1 2027.

The Rx Lab printer draws on the Additive Innovations' extensive experience in industrial binder jetting, including printer development at The ExOne Company, along with certain elements from its current National Sanitation Foundation (NSF)-certified binder jetting hardware and intellectual property originally developed by 3D Systems, Inc. and used commercially in various culinary applications. That dual foundation — high-precision industrial printing combined with hygienic fluid handling — informed the design of a system built for the unique demands of pharmaceutical formulation.

A Lab-Ready System Designed for Pharma

Unlike general-purpose binder jetting platforms adapted for pharmaceutical use, the Rx Lab printer was designed specifically for a clinical development environment. Compact enough to sit on a benchtop or integrate into a ventilated balance enclosure (VBE), the system serves as a natural lab-scale predecessor to a GMP-ready platform, which Additive Innovations plans to bring to market for both research and compounding environments, including 503A and 503B settings.

Key capabilities of the Rx Lab printer include:

  • Most compact, affordable binder jetting platform available for pharma — bringing a technology previously limited to industrial-scale systems within reach of formulation labs

  • Up to four independent fluid channels, each with independently programmable waveforms — a capability the company believes is unique in the binder jetting industry

  • Custom, fully open software architecture, giving formulation scientists direct control over print parameters rather than working within a fixed recipe set

  • API integration via either powder or fluid, expanding the range of formulation strategies developers can explore

  • Full tablet architecture flexibility, including core-shell, matrix, and channel tablet designs

  • Precision microdosing capability to support personalized dosing strategies

  • Nozzle-level detection and automated print audit logging for quality control and reproducibility

  • Point-of-care deployment potential, enabling decentralized, on-demand production that can extend the effective shelf life of formulated materials
